Basing Identity on Elements
Our identities are really very complex – a jigsaw puzzle or tapestry. However, one of the pitfalls – for adults too – is allowing yourself to define your identity with only 2-3 elements. Those elements can be positive or negative.
For example, defining yourself just as a star athlete gives you a pretty narrow identity and it will not last. On the other hand, defining yourself as a loser because of some mistakes or failures misses all the other attributes you might have.
You may be a star athlete or be on a losing streak, but that is not even close to all that you are. The key is to explore the many elements that go into making up an identity and put together the ones that fit for you to create a realistic and more complete identity.
